Comparing Feed Products
We are beginning to compare traditional UK brands offerings with Cavalor products.
In order to present a valid comparison we are trying, in an open and transparent manner, to collate fair comparisons.
Sometimes a direct comparison is not completely possible. These are examples where it is not and how we try to be fair in the comparison:
- Where a feed is designed for a similar purpose but is significantly different in nutritional content.
- If a feed requires a balancer to make it complete
- If sufficient information is not present on the manufacturers website
- If feeding rates are vague or very vague. For instance feed from 2 - 6 Kgs per day!
1. Where a feed is designed for a similar purpose but is significantly different in nutritional content.
In this case we will indicate the differences on the comparison card. These differences may well distort the cost per month price as often additional nutrition must be provided. If this is obvious - such as the use of a balancer then see the next point. If it is not obvious then we just make the point
2. If a feed requires a balancer to make it complete
In this case we make the effort to try and understand the daily requirement of both - and in light of this we arrive at a cost per day to feed this combination. In order to present the information in as clear and similar a manner as we can we reverse calculate a theoretical price per bag - the daily feeding amount will be correct and a combination of both products.
For instance - our Fiberforce Gastro comparison with Saracens Feeds.
In their case you must feed both the Re-leve and Equi-Jewel to come to an equivalent feed to ours.
Based on the test horse this equates to 1Kg Equi-Jewel and 3 Kg Re-leve per day. Further based on the averages prices found this works out at £5.07 per day. When we rework this back into our PCM model (30.4 days in a month) we see that the bag price is £25.35. Of course that is a made up bag - the important thing is that the comparative cost per month is correct.
We keep all the calculations so if you would like to specifically see how we come to any of the values please just get in touch and we will send you the numbers. Hopefully you can see it would be impractical to include all the calculations on the product pages.
3. If sufficient information is not present on the manufacturers website
We try to come to a comparison based on our experience from real world examples of what is being fed. If we can't then we don't publish the data which is why you will not see all brands represented against all our products.
4. If feeding rates are vague
In this case we have to take a fair guess.
For instance if the feeding range of a competitors product is 2-6Kgs per day without any further indication then we will calculate the ratio of their maximum rate to ours and then multiple ours by that.
For example - the maximum daily rate of our feed A is 4.2 Kgs for a 600kg horse
Their maximum rate is 6 Kgs which is 1.42x ours.
Our average rate for a 600kg horse in medium work is 3.5 Kgs therefore we assume 5 Kgs of the competitors product (3.5x1.42)
The information is, to the best of our knowledge, correct.
Where prices vary we have taken the best fair average of prices to be found on the internet at the date stated or the Manufacturers RRP as on their website. We always ignor very high prices often charged by merchants that sell on Amazon or eBay.
No delivery costs are considered.
